The troubled actress will take on the role of the late screen legend in Lifetime project ‘Liz and Dick, which will focus on Taylor’s tempestuous marriages to actor Richard Burton.

As the 25-year-old star’s turbulent personal life – which has seen her hauled in for numerous court appearances, brief jail stints and undergo rehab treatment for alcohol and substance abuse – has taken a back seat to her career in recent years, Lindsay has been handed a legal caveat in relation to the role.

If she stays on the right side of the court and obeys the judge’s orders relating to her 2007 conviction for driving under the influence (DUI), she will be allowed to take on the part of Elizabeth in the movie, ‘Access Hollywood’ reports.

The project – which is set to be produced by Larry Thompson – has been in development since shortly after the death of the ‘Cleopatra’ star in March 2011, when she passed award from congestive heart failure at the age of 79.

Last month, Lindsay was praised by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner for the work she undertook at the Los Angeles County Morgue as part of her sentence for breaking her probation in relation to the 2007 DUI incident.

She told her: “I’m pleased to say she’s done it all. Just keep doing what you’re doing, you appear to be doing it well. The probation officer has written a favourable report, as has the volunteer centre.”

“The probation officer is pleased with your progress. You seem to be getting your life back on track and that’s what we all hoped for,” Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner told Lohan.

“It was never our goal to just put people in jail, we like to see…change, and I think we’ve all seen that,” she said.

The Mean Girls actress, 25, wore a mint green form-fitting dress to her third progress hearing for her five-month court-ordered community service and therapy sessions sentence.

Lohan must complete 14 more days of community service at the Los Angeles County morgue and five more therapy sessions before her final hearing scheduled on March 29.

If she completes all her requirements by then, her probation from a 2007 drunk driving case in Beverly Hills will end, and her formal probation stemming from her theft charge will be downgraded to summary probation, under which Lohan will no longer need to check in with a probation officer.

“After March 29, all you have to do is obey all laws, stay out of trouble, move on with your life,” Sautner said.

Until then, the actress is only allowed to leave California for work purposes.

Lohan is scheduled to host U.S. comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live on March 3, a much-anticipated comeback for the actress, who last hosted the show in 2006 at the peak of her career.

The actress rose to fame as a likable child star of Disney movies such as The Parent Trap and comedies such as Freaky Friday, but has made numerous trips to rehab and jail since 2007.

Lohan admitted stealing a $2,500 gold necklace from a jewelry store in Venice, California in January 2011, and was sentenced to 480 hours community service.

On Tuesday evening, the actress hit her Twitter page, responding to fans who sent her well wishes, including congratulating her on news Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush first broke on Monday – she’s scored the role of Liz Taylor in the Lifetime TV movie “Liz and Dick.”

“Thank You So Much!” she wrote back to one user who Tweeted, “Congrats Lindsay on SNL and the Liz role.”

The actress is due in court on Wednesday for a progress report hearing, and she indicated she has been fulfilling her court ordered obligations.

“I’m only on for quick moments at a time lol… i’m actually cleaning – was at community service all day,” she wrote when one fan expressed their dismay at not being able to Tweet the star when she happens to pop online.

Another fan told Lindsay to “stay strong,” and Lindsay replied, showing off her determination.

“i’m a tough cookie! a focused tough cookie! ” she wrote.

And when a Twitter user called her their childhood crush, she thanked them for their kind words.

“omg! really? that’s so cool hahaha thank you xoxo – sorry for the ups and downs… only going up up up from here!” she added.

As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, a source told Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush that Lindsay scored the role of Elizabeth Taylor in the Lifetime TV movie, “Liz and Dick,” with one legal-related caveat: Lindsay needs to stay on the right side of court.

According to the source, if the actress continues to stick to the judge’s orders, as she has been doing, she will be playing the “Cleopatra” beauty in the Lifetime made-for-TV film about the late actress.

In addition, she will host “Saturday Night Live” on March 3, with Jack White as the musical guest.

But others in the Twittersphere were not so thrilled.

“Oh dear, what a hot mess that will be #SNL,” wrote one user with the handle Harry Potter. Another, named Jio de Leon, added: “I am expecting this to be a train wreck, just like her life.”

Another user, Laura Black, urged her followers to call SNL producers and the NBC television network to demand that they pull Lohan from the line-up.

Lohan — the star of hit Disney movies “The Parent Trap” and “Freaky Friday” as well as “Mean Girls” — is well known for her hard partying and has faced a series of legal tangles over the years.

In January California judge Stephanie Sautner said the actress, 25, was doing well in complying with the terms of her probation, meaning it could be over at the end of March.

And on Wednesday the same judge gave gave Lohan another glowing report, as she appeared in court in Los Angeles for her latest probation review.

“Miss Lohan, you’re in the home stretch,” she said. “The probation officer is pleased with your progress. You seem to be getting your life back on track and that’s what we all hoped for.

Lohan has one more court hearing scheduled for March 29, before which she must complete 14 more days of community service at the county morgue and five more therapy sessions.

The actress was sentenced to 35 days of house detention last May as part of a plea bargain over the alleged theft of a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry shop near her home in Venice Beach.

In November, Lohan spent five hours in prison after being sentenced to a 30-day stretch for breaching probation on previous offenses including a 2007 drug and drunk driving misdemeanor.

Lohan also recently landed a starring role in a made-for-television film about Elizabeth Taylor, US media have reported.
