Lindsay Lohan using house arrest as ‘time to relax’

Lindsay Lohan has officially begun serving time for stealing a necklace. On Thursday morning at 5:02 a.m., Lohan surrendered herself to the Lynwood Jail, where she was found eligible for house arrest. She was fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet that monitors her whereabouts — something she’s used to, though her last ankle accessory monitored her sobriety, not her GPS coordinates.

“Ms. Lohan will be under the supervision of the sheriff’s department and her release date is expected to be around June 29,” says L.A. Sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore. “She will serve about 35 days on home detention.” She’ll be out just in time to celebrate her 25th birthday on July 2.

He also said that she is confined to the “interior premises” of her swanky Venice Beach townhouse, though recent photos make it clear that her rooftop deck totally counts. She’s been snapped “relaxing” on said deck while reading scripts and taking drags from a Blu Cig — an electronic cigarette said to be a healthier alternative to the real deal.

The photos, by the way, were sent out by Blu Cigs themselves — Lohan posed for the pics as part of a celebrity endorsement. Good to see she’s still “working” while locked up! TMZ reports that Lindsay sees the month of confinement as a “time to relax, focus on her recovery and figure out her new game plan for her life and career.”

She also stocked up on art supplies before the Sheriff grounded her, and she plans to do plenty of painting.

The specifics of Lohan’s home confinement are unknown, but according to Los Angeles law, she may be allowed to leave home for certain obligations, including doctor’s appointments, counseling sessions, religious services, and community service.

Lindsay Lohan’s newest movie is an art project

The film career of Lindsay Lohan has been in unofficial limbo for the past four years as the former child star has contended with one legal mishap after another. On Thursday, the 24-year-old actress officially began house arrest on charges related to jewelry theft, and is expected to serve 35 days of home detention, according to reports.

Perhaps coincidentally, the Gagosian Gallery took the opportunity to announce Thursday a new art project by Richard Phillips that is titled “Lindsay Lohan” and stars the young actress as herself.

“Lindsay Lohan” is a 1 1/2-minute art film that features the actress in a series of luxurious poses and enigmatic, direct-to-camera stares. The Gagosian said the film references such movie classics as Bergman’s “Persona” and Godard’s “Contempt.” Phillips, who directed the film along with Taylor Steele, has addressed notions of celebrity culture in his paintings and other works of art.

A spokeswoman said that the film was shot in Malibu just a few weeks ago. There are no plans to exhibit the work in the U.S. as of now, she said, but it will be shown as part of the Gagosian’s Commercial Break project in Venice this year.

Lindsay Lohan begins serving house arrest

Lindsay Lohan returned to a women’s jail before dawn on Thursday and was released before rush hour to begin serving a four-month jail sentence at her home for a probation violation.

The actress left the lockup with an ankle monitor that she must wear for about 35 days, sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore said.

The term is longer than the three weeks or less that Lohan would have spent in a solitary confinement unit at the jail, where she served 14 days last summer for another probation violation.

Whitmore said the “Mean Girls” star is paying for the costs of her monitoring.

Superior Court Judge Stephanie Sautner sentenced Lohan to 120 days in jail and 480 hours of community service in April after determining the actress took a necklace without permission from a store near her home.

The judge said at a hearing that if Lohan served time under house arrest, she could not leave to whittle down her community service hours at a women’s shelter and the county morgue.

Lohan pleaded no contest earlier this month to misdemeanor grand theft but did not receive additional jail time. The jail term was imposed after Sautner determined Lohan violated her probation in a 2007 drunken driving case.

Whitmore said the actress was cooperative when she turned herself in, and it took about an hour for her to be fingerprinted and booked. No new mugshot was taken.

Lohan’s attorney, Shawn Holley, did not immediately return an email message seeking comment.

The actress has been cast to appear as the wife of John Gotti Jr. in a biopic of the infamous New York mob family. Shooting is scheduled to begin later this year.

Steve Honig, a spokesman for the film, “Gotti: Three Generations” declined comment Thursday.
